WOWY in Hockey
The idea that I had for WOWY in baseball actually originated much much earlier in hockey. Hockey has the issue that players are often paired in a disproportionate way, via linemates or defensive pairs. For example, look at the +/- figures here, and see if you can figure out who Marcel Dionne predominantly played with. Because of the disproportionate paring of players, it’s important to know how Dionne did with and without Taylor-Simmer, Taylor, and Simmer in order to try to isolate his impact. Unfortunately, we don’t have that level of detail for the older years. The NHL has been tracking for several years the ice time, in real-time, of all skaters. So, we can see who plays with who at all times (to the extent that the NHL is able to accurately track that, which, is pretty good, but not great).
Anyway, here’s an article by Kent that looks at the issue through Bobby Ryan.
