Worst player to reach 3000 hits?

Bill James thought out loud:

Damon has done a remarkable job of keeping himself healthy long enough to be a 3,000-hit candidate and adjusting his game to remain viable as age erodes some of his skills, but I would think that, if he does get 3,000 hits, he might be the weakest overall player to have done so.
