Winter Classic: New Year’s Day, or New Year’s Eve?
The NHL Winter Classic game has been played since its inception on New Year’s Day. Jan 1, 2012 is a Sunday, and, there is a possibility that going up against the NFL juggernaut on a Sunday is.... insane.
How bad would it be to make the game on Dec 31, 2011? The greatest tie in history, when the Montreal Canadiens faced off against the Russian Red Army team, was held on New Year’s Eve, Dec 31, 1975. They’ve already tweaked the Winter Classic by moving it back from its afternoon time slot to the nighttime slot because of warm weather. Would it be so bad to move the game up a day to an afternoon New Year’s Eve? It’s still all part of the same 36-hour “day”.
Or maybe we need to think of it in terms of the Sabbath, that rather than looking at a day as midnight to midnight, you think of it in terms of sunset to sunset, so the game can be played started at sunset of New Year’s Eve. See how all this starts to become silly?
If they can finish Wimbledon or the Masters one day late because of rain, they can start the NHL Winter Classic one day early because of football storms.
