Why would Boston bat Ortiz against a tough lefty?

By , 07:01 PM

Last night, Price was pitching for TB.  He is tough on lefties with a 94-96 mph fastball.  Even I will admit that I don’t think that David Ortiz is nearly the same player he was supposed to be going into the season.  Whether that has anything to do with PED’s I don’t know. I think it does, but who knows?

Anyway, after the first AB where Ortiz looked completely over-matched, I though to myself:

‘Boston is fighting for their life for a playoff spot, no?  Why would they have Ortiz in the lineup, batting 5th no less, when virtually any RHB is going to have better projected numbers versus Price, I think?’

I have no answer.
