Why do the Marlins and Royals exist?
Great article by Tyler, which made me ask the question.
The Florida Marlins have been given, by a certain number of MLB teams, a total of 158MM$ over a seven year period. In exchange for this, the teams giving up that money have received.... what exactly? The right to not have Josh Johnson and Hanley Ramirez on their team?
It’s one thing for teams to give a helping hand to other teams as a way to get those teams are their feet, as a sort of insurance payment. After all, perhaps the giving teams will need this social benefit at some point. But, that’s not what is happening here.
It made perfect sense to knock out the Expos when they did. If a team has no long-term chance of being profitable, it should be removed. In order for the Royals and Marlins to justify receiving the money from the other teams, they have to give them back something at some point. Exactly what is that?
Is the training ground for Johnson and Ramirez and Greinke that payment?
Or, is the worry that if you make the league too small, say 20 teams, that a new league will come up, and possibly compete for players? Is the idea, therefore, that it prevents competition from taking hold? So, teams are giving the Marlins 158MM$ to prevent future competition?
Exactly what is 158MM$ buying these days?
