Who should hand out the Stanley Cup?
As you know, a few months ago, we discussed who should hand out the Stanley Cup. Currently, Gary Bettman hands out the Cup. But he is reviled by most fans. Even today, in a day of utter celebration, Winnipeg fans, upon seeing Bettman on the monitor, chanted out “Bettman sucks”. There’s literally nothing Bettman can do to please a hockey fan.
So, the idea, first originated by Adam Proteau at Hockey News, and then worked on by me and Phil and others around here, was to have NHL Ambassadors take over the duties. You can have one global ambassador for the next 12 months, say Wayne Gretzky, who will be the one handing the Cup over. The first guy to touch that Cup will be a former captain of that team’s Cup winner. In the case of the Bruins, that would be Johnny Bucyk:
So, Gretzky is there, he hands over to Bucyk, who hands over to Zdeno Chara. For the Canucks, they’ve never won the Cup. You can have Trevor Linden from the last time they were in the Finals. (Linden might not touch the Cup, so Gretzky would actually hand it over to Henrik Sedin.)
You’ve got great stories and memories to retell with Bucyk and Linden (and Gretzky). And when the Cup is presented, everyone cheers, because Bettman is nowhere to be found.
All we need now is a Twitter hashtag, and a million people to follow that tag. #StanleyCupBucykLinden maybe?
