When does it become racially insensitive?
Eddie Murphy in a white disguise ("look at the tight butt"). Then Dave Chappelle as the white newscaster (or the otherwise white-guy voice). Finally Robert Downey Jr as a black guy ("you people...”; “what do YOU mean you people"). All of them hilarious. And timeless. It’s no more insensitive than Don Rickles and his cultural and ethnic jokes (he targets everyone). We’re all good here so far, right?
We all agree that “blackface”, those exaggerated facial features meant to be hurtful is all bad, right?
What’s in between? Is this somewhere near the line, not only the Jay-Z, but the Bulls getup as well?
Personally, I think it’s much closer to the Dave Chappelle as the white newscaster situation, and Dave not only “whited” himself, but also spoke dorky.
A quick test: Would Raffi Torres be able to talk to Jay-Z face to face in his getup? Would Jay-Z be insulted, annoyed, ambivalent, or flattered?
