What is more important in an LCS - keeping your ace starter’s pitch count down or saving your pen?

By , 01:15 AM

I don’t know the answer.  Obviously I am referring to Lee throwing 8 innings and 114 pitches.  That is not a whole lot of pitches, but obviously they didn’t NEED him to throw more than 6 or 7 innings if they wanted to rest his arm a little.

If it were me, I would have taken him out early and used one of my worst relievers to finish the game.

What was curious was that they let him bat in the 8th, intending to have him pitch the 9th (presumably).  The Phillies scored 3 more runs in the 8th and then they took Lee out.  Huh?  They thought they needed him in an 8-0 game but not in an 11-0 game?

My question is basically, if after 6 innings, you are guaranteed a win in the 3rd game of an LCS with your ace on the mound, would you let your ace continue or would you go to your pen?  Say your ace has thrown 85 pitches.
