Welcome hockey to my nightmare
Gabe has a post about some breathless claims. My response:
If there’s two things that annoy me about baseball analysts it is:
1. their reliance on regression and correlation to make their point, even in the face of reality
2. their devotion to their adjectives
To the first point, I call it “mathematical gyrations”. There’s no one that loves numbers more than I do. And I find the way numbers are abused is disheartening. Numbers get a bad rap because those who use it often use it as a weapon, and it gives all of us number-wielders a bad rap. Numbers are our friends.
To the second point, let history decide your fate. This isn’t a marketing brochure. If you are convinced you are 100% right, then go ahead and use the proper adjectives. If not, let us make our informed opinion. Don’t you give it to us. Or, if you want to give us your opinion, you better be packing alot.

The S in SABR is Society. The A is American. I don’t care how big your dataset, how many years, or how smart anyone is. What I care about is evidence. Unbiased, unfeeling, evidence. I care about logic. I care about rationality.
Please, enough with the breathless claims. Save that for the 3AM infomercials.

Yes, let’s start with the easy one. Let’s talk about goaltenders.
