“We don’t have that today.”
Former Canadiens trainer:
Years removed from a historic time in the team and the game’s history, Cornforth still follows the sport but isn’t particularly fond of some of the things he sees in today’s play.
“Injuries today often stem from too much boarding,” he said. “Players are running at each other and taking the body into the boards.
“Even though players today have much better protective equipment, the body can’t take the kind of punishment being dished out.
“The penalty used to be called when there were two steps and the body was taken into the boards. It was automatic,” Cornforth said.
“Today, it isn’t being called even when a player takes a couple of full strides and takes the body into the boards.
“There is a lack of respect by players today. A lack of respect for the game and for the opponent. You see intent to injure,” he said.
“There was always a kind of hate for the opponent in the heat of a game when I was playing, but there still was respect for each other.
We don’t have that today.”
