Versus is (much) better than ESPN for hockey
This is what you get with Versus: 30 minutes before the game, the game itself, and 30 minutes after the game. In addition, if there’s no NHL, you also get to watch international games, like the recently completed IIHF World Championships. (I still can’t believe that was on.) And they give you tons of games. How many? Well, alot more than I can watch, and I’ve been watching plenty.
What would ESPN give you? The pre-game and post-game would be limited to 10 minutes, and you’ll get a couple of games a week.
This is where math comes in handy. Versus may (currently) reach only 75% as many households as ESPN, but you get three times to five times more games. That means more NHL hockey is being broadcast into more homes via Versus than ESPN would.
On top of which, if there’s a conflict, it’s the NHL game that will get the dibs on Versus. ESPN will preempt NHL if it has to.
Finally, with Versus now owned by NBC, it’s easy to see how NBC Sports will give an even larger commitment to the NHL.
ESPN may be bigger and better. But insofar as hockey is concerned, Versus serves the USA market better than any other network could.
