Trends in fastball speed
There’s a reason we can’t see trends in things like OBP, HR, and so on: because it takes a loooong time for the performance to stabilize. That is, those samples have tons of noise.
But this is not the case for something like fastball speed. Whereas you can get on base 4 times in 5 one day, and go 0-4 the next day and 3-5 the third day, you don’t average 95, 89, 94 in 3 back-to-back starts just by luck. Or even in back-to-back innings.
So, when you look for trends, it’s at basic scouting-level type of data that you can look for it. And fastball speed is a prime example. And Mike has given us tons of examples to consider. Wonderful stuff.
