This hour’s primer of the week: Win Shares

By Tangotiger, 05:49 PM

From the man who turned wiki entries into online discussions: Alex gives us Win Shares

Win Shares is an interesting answer to an interesting question: given the number of wins a team actually has, how can we figure out how they add up? This is just the beginning of the answer. Bill James is one of the best at asking good questions. Win Shares are a good start. But they also go to show that the first answer isn’t always the best, even when it’s offered by Bill James.

Studes’ statement probably predates his use of WPA, but WPA does the same thing, but more explicitly:

“The Win Shares system actually goes to great lengths to make sure the total contribution from all players equals the number of games his team actually won. None of the other stats do that.”
