The Sony marketing department: Rule of 4
In a Sony brochure (Guide to Sony HD, p.4), it says:
To find your optimal viewing distance from the HDTV, multiply the screen’s size (measured diagonally) by 3 and divide by 12. Example: for a 40” HDTV, sit 10’ away (40 x 3 / 12 = 10)
Couldn’t they have said “divide by 4”, instead?
And, wouldn’t you rather start off saying that if your couch is 10 feet away from the screen, multiply by 4 to get the optimal screen size? The couch and the wall are pretty much the fixed points in your house. So, doesn’t it make more sense to start with that, and then look for a screen size, rather than putting the 40” and 42” and 46” and 50” screens through the equation?
Salesperson: “How far is the couch from your TV today?”
Me: “I dunno… about 11 or 12 feet?”
Salesperson: “Perfect, you need the 46 incher… just take the distance, and times 4.”
Now, whether the rule (of times 3 and dividing by 12 to convert inches to feet) actually holds water, who knows.
