The season is too long… to crown a champion
When people say the season is too long, I think they mean that it’s too long… to crown a champion. In 2007, Tiger Woods played from Jan 25 to Sep 30, which is almost 36 weeks (a bit over 8 months). In 2009, it was from Jan 8 to Oct 11, which is almost 40 weeks (9 months). Basically, it’s like being pregnant. MLB is 7 months. No one EVER says that they see too much of Tiger Woods, and that they wish golf would last only 7 months long. Ever. That would be crazy talk.
The difference is that, in golf and in tennis, you have 4 major tournaments to crown champions. There is no single tournament that makes one player the best for the year. Imagine if they did that, that every tournament was a barnstorming tour that gave players wins and losses, and then the top players go into the playoffs. It would be dreadful, wouldn’t it?
I would be in favor of MLB (and NHL, NFL, and NBA) to last 9 or 10 months. And have two champions (two seasons) per year. Exactly what kind of baseball fan would object to watching regular season baseball in February? And end in November? With a champion crowned in June and November, you get 4 months of regular season and three weeks of playoffs (and one week off). I understand the weather issue. I’d make all the home games down south in February. The day after the Superbowl, you have your first MLB game.
Remember… the season is not too long… it’s only too long to crown a champion.
Same deal for the NHL: the two off-months are July, August. You crown one champion end of January (just before the Superbowl), and another in June (with the World Series). There is no such thing as a fan saying he does NOT want to see Malkin or Ovechkin.
