The Honor of Fighting
Pretty good primer for the existence of NHL fights.
I was watching House of Saddam (excellent show by the way… sort of like The Sopranos, if they were in charge of a country). There was one scene where a man is required to kill his relatives, as paypack for their treachery. He goes to their house with several armed soldiers. But, instead of a simple kill, he invited them out of their house to collect guns, so that they could have a “fair” fight. Once they collect their guns, they go back in the house, and then a gunfight ensues. Simply fascinating how different cultures respond so dramatically different in these cases.
The key though is that while you may respond a certain way to knowing about these events, you do so based on how you’ve been conditioned. If you were there, you would likely respond similarly. It’s easy to take the moral high ground when insulated. But put in the trenches, and you’ve got a different view.
People who complain about hockey fights, as something to get rid of like drunk driving, have to be aware of the implications of such decisions and the reason for its existence in the first place.
