The greatest single-game reliever performance of my generation?
I remember when Pedro came into that Bret Saberhagen playoff game, when the score was 5-5 after 3 or something crazy like that. I think he ended the game scoreless.
I also remember when RJ came into a game in Seattle (I think it was soon after he came off the DL). And I remember when RJ relieved Schilling in Game 7, even though he just started a game a day or two days earlier.
And Orel Hershiser pitched 8 innings of of shutout relief of a 15- or 17-inning game (I think he was the next day’s scheduled starter).
(Normally, I’d verify my details, but I prefer to let my memory bias me. And I’m sure Mariano has had better relief performances. It was just unexpected, from the starters.)
I remember thinking that when these guys are close to retirement, they should become one-inning relievers. You know, the Smoltz or Eck plan. The Phillies have alot of starters, and are looking for a reliever. Wouldn’t Pedro be ideal?
The average starter is a far better pitcher than the average reliever. If the Phillies are thinking of setting up their bullpen, they better rely heavily on their starters who won’t be in the rotation.
