The Cruel and Compassionate Umpire
This is pretty cool. As we all have known, and was demonstrated graphically as well, when the count goes toward the hitter’s favor, the umpire cuts the pitcher a break. and when the count goes toward the pitcher’s favor, he cuts the batter a break. In short, we have a compassionate umpire who tries to change the size of the strike zone to tip the scales the other way, possibly because he feels bad that he may have unbalanced them himself.
Now, Jesse looks at it from a base-out perspective, and finds that umpires will tend toward the hitter’s favor, if he’s got runners on base, and tend toward the pitcher’s favor if there’s little hope for runs that inning. In this case, he’s cruel, pushing the balance toward whoever is already ahead.
