The Closed Period
According to Baseball America:
In the one-week period before any draft, which is called the closed period, the general rule is that no club may sign a new player.... Each team has two minutes to select a player, but unlike the glacial NFL draft, teams rarely take that long. For the most part, picks are called out in rapid succession.
Reading Moneyball, it certainly seems that this rule is routinely ignored. I’m pretty sure the NHL is on the up-and-up because they can trade draft picks, so it’s alot harder to pre-set the draft picks. However, I am also pretty sure that the NHL ignores the free agency rules, given how many players sign on the first day or two of free agent eligibility. Scott Gomez seemed like a glaring one.
So, yeah, the leagues bend their own rules all the time. Don’t tell me rules are rules. They are more like guidelines or advisory opinions.
