Swingmen PITCHf/x

By Tangotiger, 12:23 PM

This is a request for research.  First, read my Smoltz post, along with post #5.  There was a call from MGL in post 6 to use the pitch-by-pitch data, and I’m repeating it here.  What do the PITCHf/x numbers look for guys in dual roles (starter/reliever)?  Are they pitching faster, which is the reason that the difference in outcomes is almost entirely due to the higher K rate?  What is it that they are doing differently, and are *all* pitchers like this, or just guys with a plus fastball?

Someone later on postulated that umpires’ strike zones are not consistent inning-to-inning.  So, does the strike zone change?  Does it get wider in the later innings, and specifically in the 9th inning of a close game?  Does it change based on a new pitcher?  Does the score of the game affect the size of the strike zone?
