Sportsmanlike and child labor
Apparently the protocol when a child interferes with a player during a live play is for the players to self-police. That means that the player who benefited from the “let” call is to allow his opponent to get an automatic point. In the comments, the readers suggest that McEnroe did just that in his career, being the sportsmanlike player. Other readers suggested that the player who didn’t get the point should have been kinder to the child, or at the very least, not mock him later on.
I’m reminded of Baker’s kid almost getting in JT Snow’s way on his race home. If this was tennis, Snow would probably have been sent back to third base.
Anyway, I’m always flabbergasted that they have children in such prominent roles. Not only tennis ball boys (though Kramer shows that adults may not be any better), but also in baseball, where it occasionally happens that the kid down the line will field (or attempt to field) a fair hit.
