Sports Writers Unions
I have a natural bias against “members-only” organizations. Not because they include or exclude members (after all, that is the very point of a club). No, my bias with these organizations is when they overlap with the public need. A perfect example is Tyler’s takedown of the Hockey Writers Union. It seems to be a secret organization, akin to Fight Club or The Star Chamber, living in the shadows in peace, but then surfacing periodically to wreck havoc (under the guise, or intent, of justice).
The Baseball Holy Writers are like that as well. They place themselves on a pedestal, and then they issue their decrees, and they report on each other. There’s not enough Michael Douglases out there to cut them down to size.
