Sons of Anarchy
Non-sports post.
Sons of Anarchy is a great show. Because the setting is outlaw biker gangs, it seems that anyone having that idea claims that SoA is actually their idea. The show’s creator responds to a lawsuit (read it before his lawyer makes him take it down):
HAVING THE FUCKING IDEA IS NOT THE SHOW. THERE HAVE BEEN DOZENS OF OUTLAW MOTORCYCLE TV DRAMAS PITCHED IN THE LAST TEN YEARS. NONE OF THEM HAS MADE IT TO SERIES, EXCEPT SOA. BECAUSE THEY SUCKED. The same way there were dozens of mob family pitches before the Sopranos and crime scene pitches before CSI. ... That’s correct, I had a love of the subculture but was not an “outlaw biker”. The same way Damon Lindelof was never marooned on a supernatural island. I did what a good writers does. Research. Then I used a tool that is foreign to all these idiots claiming ownership—it’s called imagination. I came up with the idea for the pilot, the first season and the big mythology arcs. I generated a “pitch document” and registered it with the WGA. It’s on file, kids—the show, the characters, the narrative arcs, the date, and the writer - moi. It’s all there, fully documented.
I should point out that you can’t copyright an idea. But you can copyright the EXPRESSION of an idea. Hence The-Sopranos v mob-family-show.
