Scrapping the compensation system
I’ve talked about this alot in the past, and Dave makes his case as well.
The compensation system started because free agency was new to north america for any sport. They just didn’t know what would happen. So, they conceived this compensation system to mitigate risks of teams developing players and then outright losing them.
That’s over. It was a decent idea that is now a terrible idea. Unfortunately, this is a bargaining chip, and if the players want to get rid of it (and really, they’re not going to bother), they have to give up something. Even though really this should be a negotiation between the smaller clubs and the larger ones.
To bring back the spirit of the rule, they should put in that the player can only earn Type A or B if he played the last 3 seasons for that club.
But, like I said, scrap it altogether, because it especially sucks for relievers.
