Scherzer: FIP and PITCHf/x proponent
Why do all the pitchers who go for this have to have high SAT scores in math?
“PITCHf/x is a great tool to see where the pitch crossed the plate,” Scherzer said. “The other numbers are jargon to me and really have no significant value.”
There’s a color-coded strike zone plot and charts for horizontal and vertical movement changes, release points, ball spin, rotation and speed.
Scherzer uses them to study pitch location.
“I use it for my long-term goals and what I’m trying to accomplish,” Scherzer said.
Yet, when asked what he benefits most from in using advanced metrics, Scherzer referred to the psychological side of the game.
“It shows me there is an inherent failure in pitching,” he said. “You just have to let go of those and focus on the next batter, the next game. You can’t do anything about bloop hits.
