Right, second base is soooo unique that you need experience to play there

By Tangotiger, 09:54 AM

Bullsh!t.  Here’s Jeff with the description of someone who has only played SS in his life (including when he was a baby):

Jack Wilson ranged to his right, snared the ball right over second base, had the awareness to drag his foot across the bag as his momentum carried him forward, and then spun and made a strong, accurate throw to first to complete the double play.... The range was impressive enough. But to get the foot down, and then to make what was practically a no-look throw, all while still getting used to a brand new position - I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say this stands a chance of being one of the five best defensive plays of the season, by anybody. It certainly stands a chance of being the best defensive play all year by a Mariner. Some guys will make throws, and some guys will make dives and leaps, but Wilson made so many things happen in a split second that I don’t think he’s going to be topped.

Check out the .gifs he provides to see if his description does Wilson justice.

Jack Wilson, Adam Everett, Ozzie Smith, Mark Belanger, Dave Concepcion… it doesn’t matter if they’ve ever played second base or not.  They are guaranteed to do a better job there with zero experience than Jeff Kent with ten years of experience.  I’d rather have a left-handed Ozzie Smith at 2B than a RH Jeff Kent there.  When you are a premier-playing SS, there’s no position on the field that you can’t handle.
