Retrosheet Handedness File
(Cross-posted to multiple Yahoo groups.)
http://tangotiger.net/retrosheet/reports/hands.csv
This file shows how many PA for each combination of hitting and pitching hand for all hitters and pitchers in the Retrosheet event files. Totals should be identical to what you find on Retrosheet.org and Baseball-Reference.com.
Here are the columns, and what they mean:
PLAYER_ID - retrosheet id
FIRST_NAME_TX - as appears in the ROS file in his last year
LAST_NAME_TX - ditto
BAT_HAND_CD - see below
PIT_HAND_CD - see below
FIRST_YEAR_ID - first year he appears in the event files
LAST_YEAR_ID - last year he appears in the event files
IS_PIT - “1” if pitcher, based on PA_PIT >= PA_BAT
PA_BAT - number of PA as batter
PA_BAT_RH, PA_BAT_LH, PA_BAT_XH - as RHH, LHH, unknown hand
PA_BAT_RP, PA_BAT_LP, PA_BAT_XP - vs RHP, LHP, unknown hand
PA_BAT_RH_RP, PA_BAT_RH_LP - as RHH vs RHP, LHP
PA_BAT_LH_RP, PA_BAT_LH_LP - as LHH vs RHP, LHP
PA_PIT - number of PA as pitcher (i.e. BFP)
PA_PIT_RH, PA_PIT_LH, PA_PIT_XH - vs RHH, LHH, unknown hand
PA_PIT_RP, PA_PIT_LP, PA_PIT_XP - as RHP, LHP, unknown hand
PA_PIT_RH_RP, PA_PIT_RH_LP - vs RHH as RHP, LHP
PA_PIT_LH_RP, PA_PIT_LH_LP - vs LHH as RHP, LHP
BAT_HAND_CD rule:
1. If facing a RHP or LHP he bats more often as a LHH against each side,
then he’s a LHH.
2. If facing a RHP or LHP and he bats more often as a RHH against each
side, then he’s a RHH.
3. Otherwise he’s a switch hitter (i.e., bats more often with the platoon advantage than not, against each RHP and LHP… except for the crazy case of Mike Maddux, who batted more often AGAINST the platoon advantage more often than not, against each side)
4. If he has 0 PA, you will see an “X”
PIT_HAND_CD follows the same process. For players who have never pitched, you will see a one-char space.
