Reader post of the day: 4- or 5- man rotation?
I saw this article ( http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/chris_ballard/08/27/rotations/index.html ) on SI earlier today and was wondering what your opinion on this would be. I remember from the book saying that the 5 man rotation was probably optimal for the game right now, but it seems like guys like Will Carroll disagree, and I’d be very interested in your (or mgl’s) two cents on the issue.
Two things:
1 - The Book shows that the 5-day rotation or 6-day rotation benefits the pitcher the most (using data from 1999-2002) while BBTN/Woolner shows that the 4-day rotation is tops (using data from the 70s/80s). The takeaway is that the pitcher prefers to pitch to what he’s been conditioned to pitch.
2 - Clearly, every pitcher has his own recovery routine. It is best to try to find out what that is. Teams however turn over pitchers a great deal, and are not in the mood to spend the time to try to experiment. Therefore, teams will simply follow whatever the pitcher has been used to, regardless if there’s a better way to do it (because finding out might make it worse).
