R & D Camp
It’s the annual NHL Research and Development Camp, where they test out proposed rules, either for implementation, to dispel a myth, or so that they can have data in case the issue comes up later on in years. Brendan Shanahan, former star player, and now in NHL Ops office who spearheads the competition office:
“If, for any reason, two, three or four years down the road, we see a trend we don’t like, we’re going to have years of information to back it up. This is about being proactive.”
One of the coaches:
“I think it’s important that you just try to improve,” Bylsma said. “If you stay the same, it’s like going backward. The NHL has done a great job trying to stay ahead of the curve.”
They also talk about the unintended consequences of the specific rule changes that were tested. The extra line in the net to confirm goals is a good idea. They also added some transparent mesh on the top of the net, but then they said they have to test it against water and gatorade, because they know the goalies would do anything to block the view.
Anyway, I just love everything about this.
