Polanco, Jeter and tomatoes
Back in October of 2006, I offered that there’s not much difference, overall, between Jeter and Polanco.
Since then, their WAR (from Fangrahs):
16.4 Jeter
13.4 Polanco
And from Rally:
14.9 Jeter
12.3 Polanco
It is a lead for Jeter, about a 20% extra value. (Publication bias should have prevented me from posting this thread at all, but, well, I’ll take my licks.)
Jeter since 2007 has maintained his durability, with 545 games. And Polanco has maintained his pattern, with 498 games. That’s around 10% more games for Jeter. (I ignored this aspect in my original thread, having focused only on their rate stats.) So, Jeter has maintained an overall performance edge per PA, and an overall health edge, to get him as being around 20% more valuable than Polanco.
Since 2007, Jeter made 76MM$ through today, and Polanco made 16MM$. The gap should have been between 10MM$ and 15MM$ based on their performance, and not 60MM$.
I may have been somewhat wrong to call them both even, but they are still in the same ballpark.
