Players leave money on the table, fans STILL not appeased
Dave Berri asks:
How much money have the Heat players given up to win a title? The Super Friends have all come with a discount. And I think Mike Miller took less to joint the Heat. And now Bibby is doing the same. One would think that people who want athletes to focus on wins — and not money – would love this team. But I sense that is not the case. LeBron and company have actually just generated a great deal of hate. Which leads me to ask… what do these sports fans want?
What fans want is for players to be acquired as [insert whatever word you want] at a discount, not that they get to choose as a human being where they get to play at a discount.
Why in the world would players want to appease the fickle fans? Give the fans a championship, and they will still turn on you, even if you are Pedro.
Patrick Roy engineered his own trade out of Montreal, and when he came back, he still got an ovation. When they closed out the old Forum, and they showed a video montage, it ended with Roy’s wink in the playoffs, and the crowd erupted. So, there are exceptions, that fans will separate sport from business. They didn’t do that with Larry Walker though, even though he was never offered a deal.
Are there other Roy-like situations from your home team? I’d like to hear it…
