Pitching expanding the strike zone

By Tangotiger, 09:30 PM

J-Doug.  The x-axis represents how many feet the pitch is from the edge of the strike zone.  So, “-1” means that the ball is one foot (inside) from the edge of the strike zone (i.e. down the middle).  A “0” means a pitch is thrown at the edge of the strike zone.  A “+1” means the pitch is one foot (outside) from the edge of the strike zone.

The edge of the strike zone is any of the four lines of a rectangular strike zone.  J-Doug uses the closest of the edge to the pitch.

J-Doug is suggesting that pitchers who pitch inside the strike zone (south-west quadrant) are not getting the extra calls from the umpires, while pitchers who pitch outside the strike zone (north-west quadrant) are getting very favorable calls.

Fascinating stuff!
