People who had never watched Star Trek (until recently)

By Tangotiger, 10:32 AM

I am always shocked when I read stuff like this (this one is from Jeff):

I had never watched Star Trek until very recently and enjoy it far more than I anticipated. I like shows with goofy elements and a sort of earnest over-reaching with at least a partial self-awareness (hello, Twin Peaks). I feel like the writers are sitting alongside, beer in hand, wearing a gentle smirk to non-verbally acknowledge that yes, the commentary is transparent, but here’s some off-the-wall stuff to take the edge off that pill. I think Lookout Landing tries to do similar work with baseball. Anyways, the character bible entries on Spock and McCoy had to have been quite shallow. Their dialogue exchanges and mutual reactions are often maddeningly predictable. That is, until I realize so is true with many nonfictional people. It is rare that a person we know surprises us. Fascinating, in a way.

Boy did Jeff nail it as tersely as he did.  (And kudos for throwing in that “fascinating” at the end.  Even more impressive if it was done unintentionally, as that word is often used by Spock.)

Anyway, how does someone avoid Star Trek?  The reboot version was ready-made for the current generation.  First Contact was a true feature film.  Undiscovered Country gave you everything you need out of Star Trek.  Voyage Home was as fun a movie as you’ll get.  And if you were lucky enough to tune in for Best of Both Worlds on TV, that gave you the ultimate in the sci-fi experience for TV.

At SOME point in there, those predisposed to nerd-dom (and a baseball blogger surely is in that camp) would have watched one of the above, and gotten hooked.

I’d like to hear from others who recently were turned on by Star Trek, or have still, somehow, managed to avoid its siren song.
