Pedro v Sandy

From 1962 to 1966, with 16 teams in the league, I selected the 32 pitchers who faced the most batters (with Drysdale leading the way at 6216).

From 1997 to 2003, with almost twice as many teams, I selected the 60 pitchers who faced the most batters (with Tom Glavine leading the way at 6575).

These time periods were selected to coincide with the peak of Sandy Koufax and Pedro Martinez.

I did this to get a better sense of these pitchers’ peers.  It’s tough to compare the different pitcher usage patterns between the eras; so at the least, we should try to figure out how the other pitchers were being used.  But, not all the other pitchers, rather the other top pitchers… their true peers, to compare against.

Here are the numbers of runs allowed per 9 innings pitched of the top 7 pitchers of Koufax’s five-year era:
