Origins of baseball
John Thorn.
Here the things that make baseball BASEBALL, in order of importance. Whoever created these rules, those are the guys who deserve the plaque:
10. You have 3 “safety” bases.
20. You have to touch all 4 bases to score.
30. Bases are reset at the end of the team’s turn
40. Limited number of strikes and balls (could have been anything, but they’d have to be somewhat close to each other, and low in number)
50. The team has limited turns (3 outs, but could just as well have been 2 or 4); could also have been once through the order
60. The pitcher’s mound is somewhere in the middle of the diamond
70. You have a limited number of players on the field (9 would be the bare minimum; 10 or 11 could have worked)
80. The bases are not too close to each other (could have been anything from 75 to 100 feet)
90. Limited number of innings (anything could work, but 6 to 10 would seem right)
This is all off the top of my head. If I forgot something, put it in the appropriate sequence (in true BASIC programming fashion, the sequence numbers are in steps of 10, so you can insert as you need). If you don’t agree with me, that’s fine, don’t shoot me down. Propose your own sequencing instead. Be productive! Say “My #10 is Tango #90” or something.
Go.
