Oldest ace relievers

By Tangotiger, 09:45 PM

I noticed that Mariano Rivera was #3 in leverage index in 2011, which seemed high for an old guy.  (Jordan Walden of the Angels was at 2.51, which is close to the HISTORICAL high, and 6th place in Fangraph’s historical list… three Angels!)

Anyway, so I checked BR.com, and Mo is 5th oldest all-time (or as far back as Retrosheet goes).  If Mo does this two more years, he’ll be third oldest, behind Hoyt Wilhelm and.... Satchel Paige!

In 1952, Satchel Paige turned 46 during the baseball season.  His Leverage Index (LI) was 1.86.  He faced 582 batters in 138 innings.

Satchel Paige… the oldest closer in Retrosheet history.
