Ode to the triple

By Tangotiger, 12:21 PM

I’m in favor of any rule changes where speed is an important element in the game.

What would happen for example if bases are set at 29 meters (95 feet), and keeping the mound at 60’6”.  If I do my math correctly, that gives the pitcher an extra 3 and a half feet of throwing distance to keep the runner at 1B.  That would give the runner the chance for a slighter larger lead.  The catcher now has 7 extra feet to cover, which means the runner is going to be going alot more.  With farther bases to cover, infielders may not play as much in to cut down on the speed of the batters.  Will that lead to more times on base or less?  I don’t know.

Also, must the foul lines extend on a straightline from 1B and 3B?  Could we not angle them at say 5 or 10 degrees to make the outfield more expansive?  I would LOVE to see an outfield of Gary Pettis and Devon White et al be the norm in MLB.
