Now you see him, now you don’t… and then you see him again
When Jonas Andersson suited up for the Vancouver Canucks on Dec. 8, it marked the forward’s first NHL game in 3,158 days. That’s almost nine years. His previous contest was on April 14, 2002, for the Nashville Predators… Elias Sports Bureau, which is known for its plethora of sports stats, said it would take quite a bit of research to determine if anyone had gone longer between NHL games than Andersson.
Now, why would Elias say that? Granted, I have this already programmed, but it doesn’t take much effort to figure this out. Fred Hucul and Larry Zeidel are the winners. Then you have: Joe Matte, then Dick Cherry, Chuck Hamilton, and Gerry Foley. Gordie Howe comes in tied for 11th (by years… I don’t know by years+days). I also didn’t check goalies.
Maybe they meant it would take quite a bit of research to get it to the closest day, but when the winners lead by years, then you don’t have to worry about that.
