Non-conforming umpires
Great stuff from Jeff
As it can be seen there is one umpire that the pitchers love (Doug Eddings) and 5 that the hitters love (Randy Marsh, Gerry Davis, Jerry Crawford, Paul Schrieber and Tim McClelland). This chart should give a person a good quick reference if an umpire is generally tight or loose with their zone in the past.
So, we have a strong relationship between K, BB numbers and pitches in the strike zone. Not very strong, but fairly strong. But, here’s the kicker:
There’s really not that much difference visually is there? We’re talking about a couple of inches difference, no? Question for Jeff, and I think this may be a good way to present the data: what is the size of the strike zone of each MLB umpire, such that 90% of the called strikes are in that zone?
That is, take all of an umpires strikes, find the 90% of them that are the most closely bunched such that you get the smallest strike zone possible. Tell us what the left-to-right, up-to-down strike zone is for each umpire, and for each batting hand.
Hey, I know, hard work. But, I think this gives us a way to see what an umpire’s strike zone actually is.
