No fires to put out? Ain’t broke? Let’s burn something and fix it!
David Stern and Gary Betteman are probably cut from the same cloth. They take something we take for granted, like a leather ball or a hockey sweater and decide, for whatever reason, that a radical redesign is necessary. And, true to all failed corporate projects I’ve been involved with, rather than letting the client drive the requirements, instead take it upon themselves to define the problem and the solution. And, then they are shocked when their clients, the players themselves don’t approve. The NHL, to its credit, backed off last year, and is rolling it out slowly this year, as former NHL great and NHLPA exec Mike Gartner says: “We are trying to get the players feedback on what modifications they need to make so when they are launched they are fully functional with no complaints”. Still, what will happen is that the uniform, needing to be tucked in, will no longer have the distinctive look it currently has. All the horizontal striping at the bottom of the jersey will vanish. There’s something very distinctive and cool about a hockey sweater. Let’s hope it still will be.
