NHL: who hits and gets hit

By Tangotiger, 09:39 AM

Fairly subjective category, but that doesn’t stop the NHL from counting them because some data is better than no data.  Yes, there is bias, but bias can be adjusted for.

That’s why I’ve been begging for simple things like hang time, number of bounces to the fielder, gloving the ball backhanded or forehanded or barehanded, running throw, across the body, pump, etc, visor down, relay man hit, throw off line, pitcher covering the catcher, etc, etc, etc.  Just whatever.  Whatever you see that would tie in to whether a player makes the play or not.  That’ll be the challenge with FIELDf/x: to convert the 4-D data into something usable that will link back to the player’s performance.
