NHL players should thank Marvin Miller?
I love Marvin Miller. I am generally pro-union. This however is pushing it:
Players, managers, and coaches in every major sport, not just baseball, profited from Marvin’s concepts. All professional athletes, whether Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky, or the last man on the major league roster, should have tears of gratitude streaming down our faces. Tiger Woods et al. should realize that the salaries and other benefits they have accrued in sports are owed more to Marvin’s work than any other factor.
Marvin Miller paved the way for Alan Eagleson. If we’re going to give credit to Miller for opening up Pandora’s Box well, he gets credit for everything, not just the first thing that came out.
The growth in hockey salaries can be traced almost directly to the exstence of the WHA. Wayne Gretzky should be thanking himself, for joining the renegade league. And, up until Bob Goodenow showed up to displace Alan Eagleson, the MHL players had no b-lls on the matter. Had Marvin Miller and the MLBPA not existed, are we suggesting that Bob Goodenow or someone like him wouldn’t have showed up 20 years ago? If the money is there, and if a fair share is not going to the workers, a union will spring up eventually. Miller paved the way, but I don’t know that the other sports need to have tears streaming down their faces, nor do we need to acknowledge Miller as the primary reason for non-baseball.
Miller has so many factual arguments in his favor. We don’t need to invent ones. This isn’t Jim Rice or Jack Morris we are talking about.
