NHL Divisional Partners 1967 - 2010
This shows for each team, how many times the other teams in the league have been in their division. The first line of each team shows the total number of seasons in the league, for the period in question.
For example, among the “Original 6”:
BlackHawks: 22 divisional partners
Redwings: 20
Leafs: 18
Bruins: 16
Rangers: 16
Canadiens: 15

The Thrashers (now moved to Winnipeg), Wild, and Blue Jackets have the longest streak of unchanged divisional partners. And once Winnipeg gets its new division, one or both of these teams may get new divisional partners anyway.
There’s no reason the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays need to be married in perpetuity to each other, as well as to the Yankees and Redsox is there? You don’t have to rely on contrived fixed alignments in order to magnify the quality of your product.
The NHL divisions have been getting pretty stale for my tastes, so here’s hoping the move to Winnipeg will trigger some extra realignment. And here’s hoping MLB’s inertia (one of MLB’s 10 commandments) gets a second look.
