Next player to pit the old guard against the new guard? Pettitte? Or Damon?
After the “men we fear” have been inducted on their 15th ballots (Rice, and soon enough Morris), there’s going to be a few years where there’s going to be no ridiculous player for the grizzled veterans to ponder. Then, we’ll relive the Rice/Morris thing all over again with… Andy Pettitte. He’s got all the same things that Jack Morris has, plus more. But he’s also got the HGH. But he’s also got the “I told the truth” to cancel part of that. While Pettitte would not be a great choice for the HOF, he wouldn’t be a bad choice. He’d be basically the worst pitcher a saberist would accept into the HOF (I’d guess). Kevin Brown would have been a better choice.
Then there’ll be Johnny Damon, especially if he somehow manages to last long enough for 3000 hits. Then, we’ll hear from the grizzled veterans that you have to look beyond the numbers, while they simultaneously quote us 3000 hits.
But, please, grizzled veteran writers, please, not Lee Smith. You had Bruce Sutter. That was enough.
