Nate Silver on the best NYC neighborhoods

By Tangotiger, 10:16 AM

Ahhhh, excellent.  You can use the calculator to tailor it to yourself.

Here’s the best way to make use of it.  Set all the categories to “0”, which means all the categories have equal value.  Now, keeping all the others 0, set housing to 100.  The top 5 are Bronx (yellow).  Reset all to 0, and set 100 to Transit.  The top are all in lower Manhattan.  Keep repeating until you get a flavor of each category.  Now, set them all to “100”, and again, repeat/reset by putting one of them to 0.  All that tells you how much you can actually accept the underlying data.  Do those results match what you expect?

If they do, then you can start to shift categories to weight it to your personal opinion.  Do you agree with the results generally?  Yes?  Then you might find a few surprises.  No?  Well, maybe you are not being truthful in how much each category means.  Start moving the categories around until you get generally what you think should be the winners.  And once you have that, then you know how much you actually are weighting the categories.  That’s inferring your feelings in an objective manner.

Beautiful.
