Murray Chass again

By Tangotiger, 12:15 PM

I *really* like Chass’s blog posts.  Let me explain.  When a mainstream media member gets a quote from a player, they are the garden variety “I felt good out there”.  Completely useless Bull Durhamisms.  Chass though gets quote from GM and managers that are not garden variety, and his latest blog post is a good example of what Chass delivers to the blogosphere, setting a standard that few can match.  And his shot to the mainstream media was pure bloggerism at its finest:

Washington said it was a first-time, only-time use of cocaine that caught him and that it was a mistake to have used it and he regretted using it.

His explanation defied credibility, but everyone bought it, never questioning the likelihood of a 57-year-old man using cocaine for the first time and being tested randomly at just that time. It had to be an incredible coincidence for Washington to be believable.

But even if he was being truthful, someone had to question him about the coincidence, and no one apparently did.

That’s pretty much the issue bloggers have against mainstream media, and Chass captures it.

Now, I have not followed this particular episode because I don’t care and no one really should care.  To the extent that it is a news story, it should be covered.  Whether Chass properly characterized the media’s role in this, I have no idea.  If the media was in fact diligent, but Chass is saying otherwise, then this is also bloggerism at its worst, presuming things that didn’t happen.

***

Anyway, when Chass deals with numbers, his blog posts are terrible.  When he does with non-numbers, his posts are worth reading every time.  I hope Chass gets the bloggie award (if such a thing exists), though Posnanski is a worthy challenger.
