More walks-for-singles swap
A Poz reader took his idea (which started with Bill James) and decided to look for player comparables after doing the walks for singles swap.
I especially liked that Bonds’ comp is now Pujols.
Checking Fangraphs, and we see that Bonds’ career wOBA (.439) is pretty close to Pujols’ (.434). This means that you’ll be able to find SOME swap to make and two players with similar wOBA the same. Here’s some various swaps you can make:
500 walks <-> 400 singles + rest outs <-> 290 doubles + rest outs <-> 230 triples + rest outs <-> 180 HR + rest outs
In all cases, you are redistributing 160 runs if you use Linear Weights.
For those who are super-sharp, you will see that this parallels wOBA. A walk has a coefficient of .72 in wOBA. 500 x .72 is 360. A single is .90 in wOBA, and 400 x .90 = 360. In all cases, you get about 360 “wOBA points”.
That’s why I say that wOBA is nothing more than Linear Weights. It has one huge advantage over Linear Weights: I have never ever had to explain a below average wOBA value. If someone had a wOBA of .310, I did not have to explain that. Do you know how many people would ask how could someone with 600 PA get -15 runs, while someone with 100 PA get +1 runs?
