More time in the box than on the ice
Gabe has some interesting data on players who don’t actually play alot. These guys are in the NHL strictly because they can fight. Of the 20 players he listed, here is their time in the penalty box divided by their time on the ice:
BOX/ICE Player
219% Dave Morissette
156% Rocky Thompson
141% Doug Doull
131% Garrett Burnett
109% Kyle Freadrich
87% Mike Brown
84% David Koci
79% Joel Rechlicz
78% Kip Brennan
76% Andrew Peters
58% Eric Godard
57% Rob Ray
52% Stu Grimson
48% Ken Belanger
46% Derek Boogaard
44% Darren Langdon
42% Scott Parker
41% Aaron Downey
41% Jesse Boulerice
Morrisette only has 11 career NHL games (57 box minutes, 26 ice minutes). David Koci is the first guy on the list with at least 82 games played (376 box, 448 ice). I’d be in favor of some limit, say no more than 50%. Indeed, I’d like to see the numbers for the playoffs, because that’s where the best hockey is being played. I just checked Derek Boogaard and he has 44 box to 53 ice. Ouch. He’s got to be the exception.
