MLB GM responds to service time issue!
A Straight Arrow reader has an even straighter arrower of a friend:
My friends are at a Q&A with Texas GM Jon Daniels at my school (I’m abroad so I couldn’t attend). I had them ask him this question about this topic:
“There’s some sentiment that the current 6-year team control period hurts players who are either stuck behind stars at the same position, or late bloomers like Nelson Cruz. Do you think the current system, which keeps some players from entering free agency until they’re past their prime, is fair? Or do you think the mlb should implement a system similar to hockey, where all players become free agents after either a given amount of service time or at a given age--whichever comes first? For example, NHL players become free agents after either seven years of service time or by age 27, whichever comes first.”
And according to the reader:
It was reported back via text message to me that he was at first flustered by the question (apparently everyone was serving up softballs prior to that), and then responded by saying (paraphrasing):
“Just because a few players are road-blocked doesn’t make the arbitration system unfair. Some players actually do better in arbitration than they would in free agency. But if one team has a glut of one position, then there is value to be had and some team will be willing to trade for it.”
