Mike Silva is trying
I’ve been following the Mike Silva posts (he seems to be a blogger/reporter for the Mets) as he tries to find evidence to fit his conclusions regarding sabermetrics. Unlike most others however, he actually entertains those with a dissenting view (i.e., pro-saberists), and while dismissive, is not offensive. Basically, he’s someone that can be reasoned with, if one has the energy for it.
He is misinformed, or not well-informed when it comes to RC27 (runs created per 27 outs), when he says
But, I’ll give him credit for at least trying to have a conversation about it.Again, it is trying to determine a player’s value versus the “replacement level”.
What’s funny is that the number of teams embracing sabermetrics grows and will continue to grow, and the reliance on it will strengthen. No matter how much wishful thinking the non-believers have, it won’t change the fact that they are wrong.
The best way to describe the evaluation, is what Epstein once said: performance analysis and scouting are two lenses of the same glasses. You need both to see clearly.
